Curacao is an island in the southern Caribbean Sea that was first inhabited by the Arawak people. The island was later colonized by the Spanish in the 15th century, and then by the Dutch in the 17th century. Curacao was a major center for the transatlantic slave trade, and many enslaved Africans were brought to the island to work on the plantations. The island remained under Dutch control until the 20th century, when it became a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Today, Curacao is a semi-autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with its own government and parliament. Its economy is based primarily on tourism and offshore financial services.
